Custom Printed Bags: 4 Printing Methods and Where Each One Works

Define the required test method, conditioning and pass criteria in the specification. Review the chosen material or logo method on the sample, and request an independent test where the programme requires one. logo page.

Sublimation (All-Over Print)

Dye bonded into polyester fibre at 190–210 °C; polyester and RPET only, white or light base. Fabric width up to 150 cm, unlimited colours, photographic gradients at 300 DPI. Pattern printed before cutting, so it wraps every panel. Standard for drawstring bags, beach totes and yoga mat bags.
Test to the agreed specification

Screen Print

1–6 spot colours, Pantone-matched plastisol or water-based ink, on polyester, nylon, canvas and RPET. Flat panels up to 40 × 40 cm, one screen per colour, 0.3 mm minimum line. Lowest unit cost at 300–5,000 pcs for drawstring gym bags and canvas totes.
Test to the agreed specification

Digital Direct Print

UV or pigment inkjet straight onto cut panels of nylon, canvas, PU and dark polyester; 720–1,440 DPI, no screens, full colour. Best for 300–1,000 pcs runs with 5+ colours or per-SKU artwork, as on organizer pouches and everyday totes.
Test to the agreed specification

Heat Transfer

Printed film pressed at 150–170 °C for 10–15 s on polyester, nylon and PU-coated fabrics. Up to A3 (29.7 × 42 cm), photographic or metallic and reflective finishes. Used on reflective running pouches and running belts.

Process

All Over Print Bags Production Process: From Artwork File to Sewn Panel

Seven steps between a pattern file and a printed, cut and sewn bag. We confirm the production schedule after reviewing the specification, material availability and target quantity. Allow separate time for sample approval and freight.
Day 0

Artwork check

File opened at actual size: 300 DPI, CMYK or Pantone references, repeat size in cm, 10–15 mm bleed on every pattern piece. Missing bleed and low resolution are the two most common causes of a second strike-off.
Day 1

Print layout on pattern pieces

Artwork is mapped onto the cut pieces from the structure drawing so the pattern continues across side seams and pockets. Alignment marks are added at ±3 mm.
Day 1–5

Strike-off

An A4–A3 proof on the production fabric: colour, scale and sharpness checked in a D65 light box and wash-tested 5 cycles. Photos first, then the physical proof with the sample.
Day 5–7

Approval

You approve colour and scale or request one free revision. The approved proof is filed under your project code and becomes the reference for inline inspection.
Bulk day 1–5

Roll or panel printing

Sublimation runs on 150 cm rolls at 20–50 m per style; screen and digital print run on cut panels. Printed fabric rests 24 h before cutting so shrinkage (1–2%) settles.
Bulk day 5–25

Cut, sew, inspect

Panels cut on the alignment marks and sewn on the same line as unprinted styles; every printed panel is compared to the strike-off at the sewing station.
Pre-ship

100% final inspection

Every bag checked for colour, alignment at seams and print defects; SGS, BV or TUV inspections welcome, commissioned and paid by the buyer.

Artwork

Custom Printed Bags Artwork Requirements: Files, DPI, Repeats and Bleed

Six checks our print room runs on every file before a strike-off. Meeting them on the first send saves 2–3 days; the logo method guide covers single-mark artwork.

File Format

Vector AI, EPS or PDF for screen print and logos; TIFF or PNG at 300 DPI for sublimation and digital. Layered PSD is accepted for all-over patterns. Fonts outlined; images embedded, not linked.
AI / PDF / TIFF / PNG

Resolution at Actual Size

300 DPI at the printed size, not the screen size. A pattern covering a 60 × 30 cm duffel panel needs roughly 7,000 × 3,500 px. Upscaled web images print soft and are flagged at day 0.
300 DPI · 7,000 px for 60 cm

Pattern Repeat

State the repeat in cm (typical 10–40 cm) and whether it is straight or half-drop. Repeats over 40 cm on bags under 20 L show only a fragment of the motif, common on pouches.
Repeat 10–40 cm

Bleed and Safe Zone

10–15 mm bleed beyond every pattern piece and 10 mm safe zone inside seams, zips and binding. Without bleed, white fabric shows at the seam on dark all-over prints.
Bleed 10–15 mm

Colour Profile

CMYK or Pantone references, not RGB. Sublimation reproduces about 80–90% of the Pantone range; neon and metallic are done by heat transfer or screen print. Proof is checked in a D65 light box.
CMYK / Pantone · D65

Placement Map

Which panels are printed, which are solid, and where logos sit in cm from a fixed edge. Mixed-print bags (printed front, solid back) cut print cost 30–50% on gym totes.

Common problems

Custom Printed Bag Problems and How the Factory Prevents Them

The six print defects behind most rejections at inspection, and the control that removes each one.
Pattern breaks at the side seam
Cause: artwork sized to the roll rather than the pattern piece. Control: print layout mapped onto cut pieces with alignment marks; checked at ±3 mm on every printed panel at the sewing station.
White line shows at seams on a dark print
Cause: no bleed. Control: 10–15 mm bleed added on every piece at day 0; dark all-over prints are cut 5 mm inside the bleed.
Colour on the bag is duller than on screen
Cause: RGB file, no proof. Control: CMYK or Pantone references, strike-off approved under D65 light before bulk; see colour approval.
Sublimation ghosting or blurred edges
Cause: paper shift or moisture in the fabric during the 190–210 °C press. Control: fabric conditioned 24 h, press pressure checked per roll, first 2 m inspected before the run continues.
Define the required test method, conditioning and pass criteria in the specification. Review the chosen material or logo method on the sample, and request an independent test where the programme requires one.
Cause: under-cured ink. Control: cure temperature and dwell logged per batch; 5-cycle wash test on the strike-off, 40+ wash target on drawstring bags.
Print panels 1–2 cm smaller than unprinted ones
Cause: sublimation shrinkage not allowed for. Control: 1–2% shrink allowance on printed pattern pieces and a 24 h rest before cutting; dimensions checked at inline inspection.

Yes, with digital direct print: per-SKU or per-panel artwork with no screen cost. It is the standard for personalised pouches and small runs of 300–1,000 pcs. Sublimation and screen print need one artwork per style.
Screen print matches Pantone inks directly. Sublimation and digital reproduce roughly 80–90% of the range from CMYK; we proof the nearest match on the strike-off under D65 light and flag any colour outside gamut. Fabric colour matching is on the materials page.
Yes. Files, screens and transfer films are stored under your project code and are not reused for other buyers; an NDA is signed on request before the strike-off. See the OEM/ODM workflow for IP terms.
