Bag Tech Pack: The 10 Elements a Custom Bag Factory Needs

A bag tech pack is the document that turns a design into a quotable, sewable specification. Ten elements do the work: a 3-view flat sketch, dimensions in cm, a bill of materials, fabric denier and GSM, a Pantone colourway, a hardware schedule, logo placement in cm, stitch density at 8–10 spi, a packing spec and labelling. With all ten, an OEM sample runs 7–10 days and the quote lands in 24 hours.

Bag Tech Pack Contents: The 10 Elements Every Custom Bag Spec Needs

These are the ten blocks our sample room reads before cutting anything. Each block below states what to put in it, the unit it is written in, and what happens on the floor when it is missing.
1

Flat Sketch, 3 Views

Front, side and back at minimum, plus an interior view for any bag with more than 2 compartments. Line drawings, not renders. Call out every seam, panel break and pocket opening. A 3-view sketch is what lets a pattern maker cut a first pattern in 1 working day instead of guessing at panel splits.
3 views · Line art, not renders
2

Dimensions L × W × H in cm

Finished external dimensions in centimetres, plus capacity in litres, strap drop, handle length and pocket depth. A tolerance of ±1 cm on panels over 30 cm is normal in bag production. Without dimensions the quote is a guess and the first sample is usually 2–4 cm off in one axis.
Tolerance ±1 cm over 30 cm
3

Bill of Materials

One line per component: body fabric, base fabric, lining, mesh, webbing, binding, zipper, buckles, sliders, foam, labels and thread. State quantity per bag in metres or pieces. A 35 L duffel typically runs 18–26 BOM lines, and every missing line becomes an email during costing.
18–26 lines on a 35 L duffel
4

Fabric With Denier and GSM

Fabric choice, consumption, lining and finishing affect the unit price. Compare quotations against the same approved specification.
Compare costs in your quotation
5

Colourway With Pantone

One colour block per component, each carrying a Pantone TCX or C code: body, base, lining, webbing, zipper tape, puller, thread and binding. The mill runs a lab dip against the code and returns 2–3 shade options in 7–10 days. Colour approved by photo is the single most common bulk dispute.
Lab dip 7–10 days
6

Hardware Schedule

Zipper brand and size (YKK or SBS, #5 or #8), slider type, buckle width in mm (20, 25, 38 or 50), D-rings, swivel hooks, feet, and the finish: nickel, gunmetal, matte black or gold. Custom-moulded hardware adds 10–15 days, so flag it at tech pack stage, not after sampling.
Custom tooling needs a separate quote and schedule.
7

Logo Placement in cm

Method, size and position measured in cm from a fixed reference edge: not “centred”. Give the artwork as AI, EPS, PDF or a 300 DPI PNG at actual size. Position is jigged on the line and checked to ±3 mm. Four positions are standard: main panel, end pocket, strap and interior label.
Position tolerance ±3 mm
8

Stitching Specification

Stitch density at 8–10 stitches per inch for body seams, thread type and Tex size, seam type (lockstitch, double needle, bound or bar-tacked) and where reinforcement goes. Load points such as strap anchors are bar-tacked at 42 stitches. Under-specified stitching is where cheap bags fail first.
8–10 spi · Bar-tack 42 stitches
9

Packaging Specification

Send the current requirements for your marketplace and destination, including barcodes, bagging, warnings, carton size and weight. We confirm the packing specification and its cost before production.
Follow the current destination-specific packing brief
10

Labelling and Marking

Main label artwork and position, care and content label wording, country of origin, barcode or FNSKU placement, and carton marks including shipping marks and side marks. Getting label wording fixed before the golden sample avoids a relabelling job on 300–5,000 finished bags.
Fixed before golden sample
Have most of these but not all? Send what exists: our design team fills the gaps and returns a complete pack for approval.

How to Make a Tech Pack for Bags Without an In-House Designer

Roughly half of first orders arrive without a tech pack. Our 10+ in-house designers build one from what you have: photos, a competitor sample, a sketch or a written brief: and you approve it before any fabric is cut. Design support carries no separate charge.

Start from reference photos

Send 3–6 images of bags whose structure you want, plus a target capacity in litres and a price tier. We return a structure proposal and a fabric shortlist in 2–3 working days. See design and structure.

Start from an existing model

Our library covers custom bag styles across 8 categories and 100+ new models go on it each month. Modifying one keeps the sample at 5–7 days instead of 7–10. Browse the product hub first.

Start from a physical sample

Courier a bag you want matched or improved. We measure it, write the BOM and mark the changes you asked for, then quote against that spec. Read sample development for the sequence.

Start from a written brief

Bag type, capacity in litres, target user, channel, price tier and delivery date is enough to open a project. The 12 fields that make it quotable are in the RFQ checklist.
Design consultation and tech pack build-out carry no charge on a project heading for a 300 pcs order.

Common mistakes

Bag Tech Pack Mistakes That Add Sampling Rounds and Cost

Six errors we see most often in tech packs from new buyers, what each one does on the floor, and the control that removes it.
Dimensions given in inches and centimetres at once
Cause: a pack assembled from two sources. Control: we re-issue the pack in cm only, with capacity in litres, and ask for a single approval before pattern cutting. Mixed units cost 1–2 sample rounds; see sample development.
Fabric written as “waterproof nylon”
Fabric choice, consumption, lining and finishing affect the unit price. Compare quotations against the same approved specification. bag material guide.
Logo marked “centred on front panel”
Cause: no reference edge. Control: placement is written in cm from the base seam and the side seam, jigged on the line and checked to ±3 mm at inline inspection. See the logo method guide.
Render supplied instead of a flat sketch
Cause: the pack came from a marketing deck. Control: our designers redraw the bag as a 3-view line sketch with seam and panel breaks, then send it back for approval before cutting. Adds 1–2 days, saves a whole sample round.
Hardware changed after the first sample
Custom tooling needs a separate quote and schedule.

Bag Tech Pack to Golden Sample: The 6-Step Approval Sequence

What happens to your pack between the day it arrives and the day a sealed golden sample locks the specification for production.
Day 0

Pack review

A merchandiser and a pattern maker read the pack together and return a gap list within 1 working day: missing GSM, an open hardware line, a logo without a reference edge. Nothing is assumed silently. Attach the pack on the quote form.
Day 1

Quote against the spec

Price is quoted line by line against the BOM, with MOQ 300 pieces and the lead time tier stated. Drivers behind the number are explained in cost factors.
Day 1–3

Pattern and material call-off

Speciality materials may need additional sourcing time; availability is confirmed before sampling.
Day 3–10

Prototype build

One production-grade bag, sewn at the 8–10 spi in the pack, with your logo applied in the specified method and position. OEM builds from a complete pack land at 7–10 days. See sample development.
On receipt

Review and one revision

You check fabric hand, dimensions to ±1 cm, hardware, stitching and logo position to ±3 mm. One free revision round is included; a structural change resets the pattern and is quoted as a new sample.
On approval

Golden sample sealed

The approved bag is sealed, photographed and stored at the factory for the life of the programme, and all 4 inspection gates compare production against it: see golden sample approval and AQL inspection.

FAQ

Bag Tech Pack Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

No. A bag type, a quantity from 300 pcs and a reference photo are enough for a price range within 24 hours. A tech pack turns that range into a firm number because the BOM is quoted line by line. The 12 fields that make an enquiry quotable are in the RFQ checklist.
We issue your pack in our own format: a 1-page-per-style PDF carrying all ten elements, dimensions in cm and the BOM as a table: and you approve it before sampling. If you already work in Excel or AI we fill your template instead. Ask on the quote form.
A spec sheet is one page: dimensions, fabric and colour. A tech pack is the full build document with 18–26 BOM lines, a 3-view sketch, hardware schedule, stitching at 8–10 spi, packing and labelling. A spec sheet gets a quote; a tech pack gets a repeatable bag. See the OEM / ODM workflow.
Existing showroom samples are free, with courier paid by the buyer. Custom prototypes take 5–7 working days after the specification is confirmed. We quote the prototype fee, courier charge and any sample-fee credit before work starts. sample cost and lead time.
Yes. We sign an NDA on request before you send anything, usually within 1 working day. Files sit under a project code held by one named contact and are not shown to other buyers; moulds and patterns are stored the same way. See project communication.
Yes. Send it with the physical sample if you have one. We measure the bag, rebuild the BOM to a full 18–26 lines, add the missing GSM, coating in mm and 8–10 spi stitching lines, and return a marked-up pack with a comment on each change, usually within 2–3 working days. Read factory vs trading company for why packs from traders often lack these lines.
The pack is revised freely up to golden sample approval, then frozen. After freezing, each change is a written change order because patterns, markers and jigs are already built, and a re-cut typically costs 3–5 days. 1 free sample revision covers dimension, hardware or logo tweaks: see golden sample.
The stitching specification, followed by packing. Buyers write fabric and hardware carefully and leave stitch density blank, so the bag is sewn to factory standard rather than theirs. Writing 8–10 spi and naming the bar-tack points takes two lines and settles the argument at final inspection.
