Zip-closure mat bag

Full-length #5 zip on a 300D polyester or canvas tube, 14–16 cm diameter, with an end pocket. The long side opening lets a rolled mat be placed inside instead of pushed through the end.

Drawstring mat bag

Where Yoga Mat Bags Fail: and What We Do About It

Three problems account for most mat bag returns, and none of them are about fabric. All three are pattern and anchor decisions made at sample stage.

The mat does not go in

A bag cut for a 4 mm travel mat at 10 cm diameter will not take a 6 mm studio mat at 13–15 cm, and a bag cut generously for the thick one lets the thin one rattle. We pattern from the actual mat you pair with, add 2–3 cm of ease on the diameter, and check fit on the prototype with the mat rolled loosely, not tightly.

The strap anchor rips out of the tube

A mat bag is worn cross-body and swung on and off a shoulder 4–6 times a class. A strap sewn to a single layer of 300D at each end tears within a season. We anchor into a 2-layer reinforced patch, bar-tack in a box-X, and pull-test each end to 15 kg on the prototype.

The zip catches the mat

A full-length zip with no flap grabs the mat surface every time the bag is closed, and a coil zip bites into PU or rubber mats. We fit a 2 cm internal flap along the zip run, use a #5 coil with a rounded slider and finish both ends with a zip garage so the mat is never dragged over an open slider.
