Bag Manufacturing Cost Breakdown: Typical Share of Unit Cost by Line

Ranges are typical for a 600D–1680D polyester or nylon sports bag at 300–5,000 pcs. Percentages shift with the bag type: a 40 L duffel is fabric-heavy, a running belt is hardware- and labour-heavy. No dollar figures are shown because every line depends on your specification; the quote itemises them.

Cost drivers

Custom Bag Cost Drivers:
10 Specification Choices That Move the Unit Price

Ten decisions on the RFQ or tech pack account for most of the spread between two quotes for the same bag type. Each card gives the direction and a typical percentage range.
1

Fabric denier and construction

Moving from 600D to 1680D polyester, or to 840D ballistic nylon, lifts the fabric line 20–40%; because fabric is 35–50% of the unit, that is 7–20% on the finished bag. RPET and coated TPU sit at the upper end; see materials & colours.
Effect: +7–20% on unit cost
2

Bag size and panel count

Fabric consumption scales with surface area, so a 55 L duffel uses 30–40% more fabric than a 35 L one. Each extra panel adds a cutting and a sewing operation; a 12-panel bag takes 25–40% longer to sew than an 8-panel bag.
Effect: +5–15% per size step
3

Compartments and pockets

Every zippered pocket adds a zipper, a slider, a puller, a lining piece and 3–6 min of sewing. Two compartments versus six changes sewing time by 20–40% and hardware count by 2–3×; a shoe compartment is the most common addition.
Effect: +3–6% per zippered pocket
4

Hardware brand and finish

Stock SBS zippers and plastic buckles are the base tier; YKK lifts the hardware line 20–50%; metal buckles, custom pullers and a logo-moulded slider lift it further and add 10–15 days for the mould.
Effect: +2–10% on unit cost
5

Logo method and positions

One screen-printed or woven-label logo is the low tier; embroidery of 8,000–12,000 stitches sits mid; a PU patch or metal badge sits high. Each extra position adds a full operation. Method choice is in the logo & branding page.
Effect: 3–10% of unit cost
6

All-over print and colourways

Sublimation is priced per m² of fabric and adds 3–5 days before cutting. Each colourway is a separate 300 pcs MOQ with its own lab dip; 3 colourways at 300 pcs each cost more per unit than 900 pcs in one colour.
Effect: +5–15% for all-over print
7

Lining, padding and reinforcement

A 210D lining, 5–10 mm EVA base board, padded straps and a PE-board bottom each add a material and an operation. A fully lined and padded laptop backpack sits 15–30% above an unlined gym backpack of the same fabric.
Effect: +5–30% depending on build
8

Packaging level

A polybag with a paper hangtag is the base; a printed insert card, a folding retail box and FNSKU labelling for FBA raise the packaging line from 3% toward 8% and add 1–3 min of packing labour per unit.
Effect: 3–8% of unit cost
9

Order quantity and repeat status

Set-up, sampling and QC time are spread over the run: 1,000 pcs is typically 10–20% lower per unit than 300 pcs, and repeat orders skip pattern work and run 20–30 days instead of 25–35. Full tier table below and in the MOQ guide.
Effect: −10–35% from 300 to 20,000 pcs
10

Tolerances and inspection level

Tighter tolerances (±0.5 cm instead of ±1 cm) and a stricter AQL raise rejection and rework time. 100% pre-shipment inspection is included; third-party inspections by SGS, BV or TUV are welcome on any order, commissioned and paid by the buyer. See final inspection and AQL.
Effect: +1–5% for tight tolerances

Quantity tiers

Custom Bag Cost by Order Quantity:
300, 1,000, 5,000 and 20,000 pcs

Unit cost falls with quantity because pattern, set-up, sampling and QC time are spread over more bags, and fabric is bought in full rolls instead of cut lengths. The ranges are typical for a 600D–900D polyester sports bag; direction and magnitude, not dollar prices, are what a buyer can plan against.

Cost reduction

How to Reduce Custom Bag Cost Without Lowering the Specification

Six changes that our quoting team proposes when a target price is 10–20% below the first quote. None of them reduce fabric denier, stitch density or inspection level.

Use an in-network fabric

200+ verified suppliers hold 600D–1680D polyester, 420D–840D nylon, RPET and mesh in stock colours. An in-network fabric adds 0 days and avoids the 7–14 day and minimum-roll cost of an out-of-network source; see material sourcing.
Saves: mill minimums + 7–14 days

Consolidate colourways

One colourway at 900 pcs is cheaper per unit than three at 300 pcs, because each colourway carries its own lab dip, cutting set-up and fabric minimum. Add the second colour on the repeat order after 60–90 days of sales data.
Saves: 2 lab dips + 2 set-ups

Swap a mould for a stock part

A logo-moulded slider or buckle adds a mould and 10–15 days. A stock YKK or SBS slider with a woven label or debossed PU puller keeps the branding at 300–1,000 pcs and defers the mould to the 5,000-pc order.
Saves: mould cost + 10–15 days

Reduce pocket count, keep fabric

Removing one internal zippered pocket removes a zipper, a slider, a lining piece and 3–6 min of sewing without changing the outer shell. Buyers usually keep the wet/dry pocket and drop the third slip pocket.
Saves: 3–6% per pocket

Move to polybag + hangtag for FBA

A printed retail box is 7–10 days and the highest packaging tier. For FBA listings a polybag, hangtag and FNSKU label meet the requirement and keep packaging near the 3% end of the range.
Saves: up to 5 points of unit cost

Order a 3-piece set on one fabric

A duffel, shoe bag and pouch cut from the same roll share fabric minimums, hardware and set-up. Order value rises 25–40% while the blended unit cost of the set falls below three separate orders.
Saves: shared roll + set-up
Common problems

Custom Bag Cost Surprises:
Where Quotes Go Wrong and the Control for Each

The six reasons a landed cost ends up 10–25% above the first quote, and the step in our process that removes each one.
Quote given per bag, then a 15% tooling line appears
Cause: mould or screen cost hidden in the unit price. Control: tooling, screens and patch moulds are quoted as one-time lines on day 1–2, separate from the unit price, so the tier table above stays comparable.
Fabric substituted after the quote
Cause: fabric named by look, not by spec. Control: the quote states denier, GSM, coating and supplier code; the swatch is approved with the sample and checked at incoming material inspection.
Freight doubles the expected cost on a small order
Cause: air freight on a 300-pc order priced per kg. Control: we quote FOB by default and give sea LCL, air and express options in the shipping terms guide, so freight is chosen before deposit.
Sample price used as a proxy for unit price
Existing showroom samples are free, with courier paid by the buyer. Custom prototypes take 5–7 working days after the specification is confirmed. We quote the prototype fee, courier charge and any sample-fee credit before work starts. sample cost and lead time.
Three colourways priced like one run
Cause: MOQ read as a total, not per colourway. Control: the MOQ guide and every quote state 300 pieces, with a per-colourway line.
Rework cost after inspection
Cause: tolerances agreed verbally. Control: ±1 cm dimensions, 8–10 spi and logo placement ±3 mm written on the golden sample sheet; 100% pre-shipment inspection catches defects before packing.
