Where the shoes go decides the pattern. Four positions, each with a different trade-off between access, capacity and how the bag sits when dropped.

End-tunnel duffel

Tunnel through one 28–32 cm end panel of a gym duffel. Shoes go in heel first; the mouth takes the most stress so the zip steps up to #8.

Base-tunnel duffel

Tunnel runs under the full base and opens on the long side. Shoes lie flat, the load stays low, and the main body keeps its full height.

Where Shoe Compartment Gym Bags Fail: and What We Do About It

Three defects account for nearly every return on this bag. All three are pattern and hardware decisions, checked on the prototype and again at inline inspection.

The shoe does not fit

A tunnel cut to 29 cm takes an EU 42 and jams on an EU 45. We cut 31–34 cm internal length with a 14–16 cm mouth, and ask for the largest shoe size in your customer base before patterning. A running shoe is also 1–2 cm taller than a court shoe, so the tunnel height is specified too.

The tunnel zip splits at the mouth

Shoes are forced in at an angle, so the mouth sees 2–3 times the load of any other zip on the bag. A #5 that lasts elsewhere splits here. We use a #8 coil or moulded zip with bar-tacks at both ends and a 25 mm webbing binding around the mouth, and cycle-test the prototype 200 times.

Dirt and odour migrate into clean kit

A single 210T divider transfers grit through the weave and smell through the seam. We line the tunnel separately, stiffen the divider with 1 mm board, vent it outward through 100–200 GSM mesh and keep the tunnel zip on the outside face so the main body is never opened to reach the shoes.

Custom Shoe Compartment Gym Bags: Frequently Asked Questions

Our standard tunnel is 31–34 cm long and takes up to EU 46 / UK 11 / US 12. Send the largest size in your customer base and we cut to it; each extra 1 cm of tunnel comes out of main-body capacity.
End tunnels are cheapest and share the gym duffel pattern. Base tunnels keep the load low and the body full height. Side pockets suit backpacks. We build all three and can prototype two positions in one 5–7 day round.
A 100–200 GSM mesh vent panel or 6–8 brass eyelets on the outer face, a wipe-clean coated lining and a stiffened divider between tunnel and body. Keeping the wet pocket on the opposite end matters as much as the vent; see wet-dry gym bags.
Shoes go in at an angle and push against the slider, so the mouth carries 2–3 times the load of the main opening. We fit a #8 there even when the body runs #5, bar-tack both ends and cycle-test the sample. Details in trims & hardware.

Tunnel fit against a size reference, zip cycle test, bar-tack count at the mouth and vent seam pull test. All four are logged at inline inspection and repeated at 100% pre-shipment; SGS, BV or TUV are welcome to witness on your commission.
